Biography

Ashley at CKESAshley Johnson is a dancer, dance educator and Mitzvah Technique teacher working mainly as a teaching artist, collaborative performer and bodyworker. Ashley has a diploma in Dance from Grant MacEwan College (Edmonton) a degree  in dance from the University of Calgary and special training in Sport Science from the University of Hong Kong.   In 2007 she began working under the guidance of Modern dance pioneer and Miztvah Technique teacher, Amelia Itcush, who certified her as a Mitzvah Technique and Itcush Method Teacher.  In 2011 she embarked on a mentorship with Emilie Conrad, the founder of Continuum Movement and continues to pursue the connection between somatic movement, the creative impulse and dance.

Ashley’s residencies with Living Sky focuses on ‘Joyful Learning’, why we dance, how we dance and when we dance.  She regularly teaches Anne Green Gilbert’s work ‘Brain Compatible Dance Education’ from grades K – 12.  As a part of her residency she engaged in a  collaboration with Winnipeg based contemporary dancer, Sarah Roche. Together they created a site specific work titled, ‘Shifting Foundations – Re visioning space through dance.’  She has also been instrumental as a dancer, teacher and organizer in the ‘Remembering Amelia’ Interactive Exhibit.  ‘Remembering Amelia’ featured the work of dance pioneer Amelia Itcush and her method of body work, and toured to seven Canadian cities. As a founding member of Prairie House, she creates original work that explores the connection between dance and theatre.  Ashley is currently based out of Saskatoon, SK.
